Dogecoin é uma moeda digital de código aberto baseada no meme "Doge" que funciona como um meio peer-to-peer para pagamentos rápidos e gorjetas digitais. Diferente de projetos apoiados por entidades corporativas, seu valor é impulsionado por uma comunidade global, e o projeto é gerenciado por um grupo descentralizado de voluntários e pela Dogecoin Foundation sem fins lucrativos, em vez de uma empresa formal. Originalmente criada em 2013 pelos engenheiros de software Billy Markus e Jackson Palmer como uma paródia de mercado, o projeto não realizou venda pública ou rodadas de capital de risco. A rede opera como um fork do LuckyCoin, que por sua vez era um fork do Litecoin, usando um mecanismo de consenso proof of work. Ela emprega o algoritmo Scrypt para garantir que o processo de mineração permaneça rápido e eficiente, com novos blocos processados a cada 60 segundos. Uma característica técnica única é o uso de merged mining, permitindo que mineradores protejam Dogecoin simultaneamente com outras redes baseadas em Scrypt, como Litecoin. Para manter as taxas de transação baixas e a rede funcionando indefinidamente, Dogecoin possui uma oferta ilimitada, onde novas moedas são adicionadas para sempre. Em um marco regulatório importante em março de 2026, uma estrutura conjunta da SEC e CFTC classificou oficialmente Dogecoin como uma commodity digital, colocando-a na mesma categoria de ativos que ouro ou petróleo.
