EVM以太坊是一個全球性的開源去中心化應用平台。換句話說，它是一個去中心化的區塊鏈平台，讓開發者能夠在沒有中心化機構控制的情況下，建構和部署智能合約與應用程式。與主要作為數位貨幣的比特幣不同，以太坊作為一個可程式化的全球性電腦，開發者可以在其上創建任何類型的去中心化服務。 該平台承載超過140億美元的DeFi應用，擁有數十萬活躍用戶，涵蓋金融協議、NFT市場與遊戲平台。2022年9月轉換為權益證明（Proof of Stake）後，能耗降低逾99%，不僅解決環境問題，也增強了網路安全。 網路透過數千個獨立的驗證者節點運作，在以太坊虛擬機（Ethereum Virtual Machine）上處理交易並執行智能合約。智能合約是以Solidity編寫的自動執行程式，在條件滿足時自動履行協議，無需銀行或經紀商等中介。 驗證者質押ETH作為抵押品來提議和驗證區塊，誠實參與可獲得獎勵，惡意行為則會面臨罰沒。EIP-1559升級引入了動態基礎費用機制，每筆交易都會燃燒ETH，在網路活動高漲時，燃燒量超過發放給驗證者的數量，形成通縮壓力。 Vitalik Buterin於2013年提出以太坊概念，但共有七位共同創辦人協助建構，包括創造Solidity與EVM技術規格的Gavin Wood，以及創立ConsenSys的Joseph Lubin。該項目於2015年7月上線，此前透過群眾募資籌得超過1800萬美元，迅速成為最大的區塊鏈開發者社群。重要里程碑包括2020年的信標鏈（Beacon Chain）啟動、2021年實施手續費燃燒的倫敦硬分叉（London hard fork），以及2022年的合併（Merge）轉為權益證明。 以太幣（ETH）具備多種功能：支付交易手續費（gas）、質押以維護網路安全並賺取3-5%年化收益、作為DeFi協議中的抵押品，以及購買NFT與數位資產。該資產日益受到傳統機構採用，上市公司將ETH納入公司庫房以產生質押收益，同時保有區塊鏈曝險；2024年，美國SEC批准了現貨以太坊ETF，讓傳統投資者可透過一般經紀帳戶取得曝險。 以太坊的路線圖聚焦於大幅提升交易容量至每秒超過10萬筆、縮短確認時間，並在維持去中心化的同時，抵禦量子運算等未來威脅的安全性。
