The DAO was a decentralized autonomous organization on Ethereum that functioned as a venture capital fund, allowing token holders to vote on investment proposals. It was one of the first major DAOs and its 2016 hack led to a contentious hard fork of Ethereum, splitting the chain into Ethereum and Ethereum Classic.
