Protectionism doesn’t work. The USG should support American companies working on both proprietary & open-weights AI models and ensure the top open-weights models are American. It shouldn't ban Chinese open-weights models and take the competitive evolutionary pressure away.

The fact that cheap, open source AI models can essentially match frontier model capabilities is very good for the general public. It’s very bad for frontier labs trying to gatekeep and charge for access to super intelligence.
