BitShares is a blockchain platform that enables decentralized exchange (DEX) and smart contract functionality. Launched in 2014, it uses a delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism and allows users to create custom assets and trade them on a decentralized order book. It was one of the earliest Layer 1 platforms focused on financial services.
